Queen Victoria and the Victorian influence is still very much in evidence in the way we enjoy tea today. There are still those of us who long for a gracious world where good manners are everything, where concern for each other is a major focus, and where entertainment can be enjoyed by everyone. Having tea is such a past time. It is more than a “tea bag-in-a-cup” experience. Here’s how I, the Tea Gourmet, would describe the occasion.
- Hot water is poured over loose tea that has been placed in a heated china pot.
- After steeping, the soothing tea is poured through an antique tea strainer into matching cups and saucers.
- Delectable tea sandwiches are served with scones and mounds of clotted cream and strawberry preserves on delicate china plates.
- Pastries, cakes and chocolates make the mouth water.
- The excitement of sparkling silverware, crisp linens, fresh flowers, and soft classical music playing with fragrant candlelight that beckons you to admire the visual display.
But most of all it is serenity, calm, and an atmosphere of oneness with your companions. So take the time to have a cup of tea—the proper way. Whether a tea tray set for one or a tea table set for four, create a serene hour for yourself and/or your guests. Once you start, it will become a habit that will be hard to break. “Taste and See that the LORD is good”.
