I absolutely adore old (or should I say, vintage) movies. One of my favorite that I watch every Christmas holiday season is the musical, “Tea for Two” starring Doris Day and Gordon MacRae. Produced in 1950, this movie is a spinoff of a famous Broadway play, “No, No, Nanette”.
The story line goes something like this: Doris Day, a young heiress with aspirations of being a star, bets her uncle that she can say “no” to every question asked of her for an entire weekend. If she wins, she gets the chance to star in her own Broadway show. Of course she falls in love with MacRae, who she must say “no” to and the bet forces her to give up her part in a Broadway play she desires.
One of the hit songs is “Tea for Two”, from which the movie got its title. Here are the lyrics.
“Picture me upon your knee with tea for two and two for tea just you for me and me for you alone! Nobody near us to see us or hear us, No friends or relations on weekend vacations, we won’t have it known, dear, and that we own a telephone! Day will break and you’ll awake and I will bake a sugar cake for you to take and all the boys to see. We will raise a family, a girl for you, and a boy for me, Can’t you see how happy we would be?”
Put on a pot of tea and rent the move. Settle down to enjoy the comedy and excellent music. It’ll increase your holiday spirit (even though it is not a Christmas movie)!
