One of my favorite green teas is Genmaicha or Japanese Green Tea with Roasted Brown Rice. It’s the highlight of lunchtime at the Japanese Embroidery Center. After a morning of stitching, it’s great to relax with a cup of Genmaicha in the company of fellow stitchers as we share the joys and woes of Japanese Embroidery.
Japanese Green Tea with Roasted Brown Rice is filed with fire-roasted rice (looks like popcorn) that gives this tea a sweet toasty flavor. When brewed, Genmaicha turns a light brownish color. First used by Japanese farmers as a cost-saving measure, Genmaicha remains one of the most popular teas in modern Japan. It has less caffeine and tastes less astringent than most green teas.
Although Genmaicha is one of the most popular teas at restaurants in Japan, you don’t have to go there to enjoy this bold yet light tea. Genmaicha should be made with boiling water and should only steep for short time.
