Recently I received a package in the mail from Tavalon Teas, a specialty tea manufacturer in Brooklyn, NY. Tavalon’s goal is not only to create the best tea blends the world has ever known, but also to cater these tea blends to the American palate.
In my package were a jar each of Tavalon’s Purity, Jasmine Green and Lemongreen along with a box of paper tea filters. I’ve been experimenting with a variety of way to enjoy these premium teas ever since and have not been able to determine a clear favorite as of yet. All three are delicious although I’m leaning more towards the Jasmine Green because the combination of green tea and scented Jasmine make my taste buds water.
The first thing you notice about these loose teas is that the presentation is excellent. They come in UV coated clear jars to keep the loose tea fresh. This is great, because you can see the tea (and the jars look great on kitchen counter tops).
Purity Tea
Tavalon Purity Tea is a detoxifying black tea blended with peppermint and ginger root. It tastes as delicious as it smells. I let the loose tea steep for five minutes in my favorite teapot. When brewing the smell of the peppermint and ginger were strong enough to open the sinuses and ease breathing. It made the tea seem almost herbal.
From a taste perspective, the peppermint flavor in Purity Tea appears stronger than the ginger at first; and after swallowing, that’s when you get a great ginger aftertaste that delicately lingers on the palate. I tried the tea with and without sugar and determined that I like it best without any sweetener.
Jasmine Dream
This top-grade green tea is meticulously perfumed for several days with night-blooming jasmine blossoms. According to serving directions on the jar, two teaspoons of Tavalon Jasmine Dream Tea should be brewed for three minutes per 8 ounces of hot water. I found that this amount made the tea too strong; so for the next cup I used only one teaspoon. Additionally, I discovered that if I did not strain the tea after 3 minutes, it would start to taste bitter and spoil the flavor.
Tavalon Jasmine Dream Tea has an amber-green color and makes a very nice iced tea, with a refreshing taste and smell. Add lemon and sugar for a Southern sweet tea sensation.
Lemongreen Tea
This zesty and refreshing drink is great both hot and iced and will lift your spirits and aid in digestion. Tavalon Lemongreen Tea is a refreshing, low-caffeine blend of mellow green tea from China and zesty Thai lemongrass. My experimentation here was to use the brewed tea leaves to bake fish. What a surprising and delightful taste…but, back to the Tavalon Lemongreen Tea
, which I thoroughly enjoyed as a lemony pick-me-up in the morning after getting out of bed.
You can’t beat these three Tavalon Teas or any of their numerous varieties. What new tea discoveries have you made recently?
