Tea reached the shores of England around 1653 and became one of the most popular beverages in the world. Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford is credited with inventing Afternoon Tea. Because dinner was not served until 7 o’clock, she would eat a 4 o’clock snack to keep the hunger pains away. Each time she entertained, this “snack” was served to her friends, and history was made.
Queen Victoria is responsible for turning Afternoon Tea into a beautiful, gracious dining ceremony. She used only the best linens and unique tea implements. Delicate bone china teacups that were so translucent you could see your fingers through them were produced and used to enjoy tea. Delicious recipes were created just to be served at teatime. Once the Queen set the standard, her subjects quickly complied. Soon invitations for Afternoon Tea became a social requirement for the British Aristocracy.
